With Peaty out, is this Nic Fink's golden opportunity to shine at the Paris Olympics?

Adam Peaty has tested COVID-19 positive! Peaty, who won silver in the men’s 100m breaststroke yesterday, will be going into quarantine following his unexpected Olympic setback. However, while this is heartbreaking news for Great Britain and Adam Peaty, unexpectedly, US swimmer Nic Fink also seems to be in danger.

As a matter of fact, Nic Fink and Adam Peaty went toe to toe in the finals. While none of them managed to clinch the top position, both Fink and Peaty clocked 59.05s to settle for the second spot. And in doing so, Peaty and Fink had to share the podium together—a big no-no if we remember the protocols mentioned during the deadly COVID-19 era. Confirming the credibility of the news, SwimSwam took to their X account and wrote, “The morning after tying for silver with Nic Fink(🇺🇸), Adam Peaty(🇬🇧) tests positive for COVID. They shared the step on the podium last night😬

Peaty’s medical condition would mean Nic Fink too will now be coming under the radar. Having been so close to Peaty, the US swimmer has a high risk of contracting the virus. And if under some unfortunate circumstances, Fink too, is diagnosed with COVID, his quest in the 200m and 50m will be coming to a screeching halt. Making matters worse, soon after his event yesterday, Nic Fink had quite a long conversation with the legendary swimmer, Michael Phelps. This means Phelps is also at the risk of being infected with the virus. However, according to recent updates coming from the Great Britain camp, things are not looking so much worse as many had expected them to be.

Team Great Britain wants Adam Peaty back soon

The official statement from Team GB revealed that Adam Peaty complained about feeling unwell right after his qualification swim. However, just before yesterday’s final, Peaty’s symptoms started to worsen. Following his silver medal triumph, the British swimmer stated that he felt more and more unwell. Peaty was immediately sent for COVID testing, which came back positive.

Such a revelation made the authorities conduct the tests on all other members of the team. Luckily, none of them have returned a positive result thus far. However, repeated tests will be conducted periodically to ensure maximum security and precautions are being maintained.
