This was also the first time in nearly half a century that this occurred, because the last time America clinched a gold medal at a World Aquatics Championships for the men’s 100-meter breaststroke event was nearly 50 years ago! The last time the American national anthem was played for the event was back in 1973.

At the 1973 World Aquatics Championships held in Belgrade, John Hencken from the United States, who is a three-time Olympic champion and former world record holder, won the gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke event. Hencken swam the exciting race, defeating Mikhail Khryukin from the Soviet Union, who won the silver medal.
