Michael Phelps struggled with ADHD as a child and juggled his day between swimming, football, and LaCrosse. Hence, football remained a part of his life. Furthermore, being a Baltimore Ravens fanboy and his timeless friendship with NFL legend Tom Brady‘s worthy rival, Ray Lewis gave him enough reasons to be involved in the sport over the years.

Michael Phelps and mama Phelps couldn’t hold tears after seeing Baltimore Ravens win Super Bowl 2013

When Baltimore Ravens won their first Super Bowl title in 2001, Phelps’ Olympic medal count was zero. However, when Ray Lewis and the team repeated history in 2013 after defeating the 49ers by the score of 34–31, the swimming legend had 18 Olympic gold medals under his name. This was the team Phelps saw and followed since he was a young boy trying to make his mark. Hence, witnessing his home team’s victory made him and mama Phelps overwhelmed with emotions.

“It was unbelievable. My mom and I were literally up in the stands crying our eyes out the whole entire time. It’s amazing to bring it back to Baltimore. It’s destiny. They worked so hard together as a team and it’s good to see Ray [Lewis] go out on top like this,” said Phelps after the match.

However, more than the trophy, the ‘Baltimore Bullet’ was overjoyed with his friend Ray Lewis’ contribution to this remarkable feat.

A timeless friendship

Phelps always speaks very highly of Ray Lewis. The Ravens linebacker has always been there for him in his time of need. In fact, he was the one to bring the swimming legend out of the abyss when he was in a deep negative phase of his life.

Talking about the impact Lewis had on his life, Phelps said, “He was probably the single reason I came back for four more years. A lot of people don’t know that, but things that he has said to me, I can never thank him enough.”
