Michael Phelps was recently inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The 28-time Olympic medalist who boasts a record of 23 Olympic gold medals is also the most decorated Olympian of all time. However, Phelps was not the only inductee as a total of 13 individuals made the Hall of Fame Class of 2023, which also included Phelps’ long-term coach Bob Bowman. It is fair to say that the swimmer and coach duo have established themselves as one of the most successful pairing in sporting history, and the two have been together since Phelps was only 10-11 years old.
In a recent interview, Bowman shed light on how Phelps had the unique ability to recollect certain races from his career and how he could pinpoint various aspects of his illustrious swimming career. In fact, Bowman even revealed the common link that connects Michael Phelps with basketball stars like Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

During the pandemic days, Bob Bowman and Michael Phelps had the opportunity to rewatch and dissect some of his past iconic Olympic swims. The legendary coach also highlighted that some of Phelps’ swims were more exciting to watch than others. In fact, Bowman pinpointed Phelps’ 200m butterfly loss against Chad le Clos at the 2012 London Olympics as one of Phelps’ more thrilling races. Bowman was also asked in a recent interview if Phelps is somewhat like NBA star LeBron James, who also possesses the ability to recall past games.
According to a Swimming World Magazine report, Bowman replied,??I think he is definitely a savant. He is a lot like Michael (Jordan) was, in that he is able to remember specific details, key moments that made a difference.”?Bowman also revealed another instance when he was watching the 2016 Rio Olympics 200m individual medley with Phelps and the swimmer indicated how he’ll look for Thiago Pereira in three strokes, which eventually happened. Phelps also made waves with his recent comments as he headlined the 2023 13-member International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
