Comeback. A simple yet strong word that holds utter importance in a swimmer’s life. Throughout their journey, they look for a perfect opportunity, a perfect swim that gets them popularity. And well, no one can predict the time it takes for them to achieve that status as some take years, while others, a few months.

There are numerous examples to explain this, as legends like Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Caleb Dressel, and more have featured in one. But today, we have a young gunner that has stunned the swimming world by having the perfect comeback. Australian swimming prodigy, Caleb Issac Cooper, has silenced his haters straight from the pool, and fans are congratulating him for his victory.

Issac Cooper, a 20-year-old swimmer, made history on June 14, 2023. He featured in one of the most unexpected swims, winning the men’s 100m backstroke final in a time of 53.47s. This led the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in shock as fans did not have high expectations from him. After all, Issac had his name in ruins in 2022, so fans had their eyes fixed on others.

In July 2022, Cooper fell prey to an unnecessary controversy as officials sent him back home from Common Wealth Games 2022. He was escorted back to Australia right from the training camp, with the governing body releasing a statement about the same. They claimed to withdraw Cooper over “wellbeing challenges including the misuse of medication,” but sadly, that wasn’t the case.

So, the young lad moved on to continue the practice, searching for a win. And after spending months in the pool with rigorous training, he participated in the World Shortcourse Swimming Championships. “I’ve been using those [sports] as training sessions, as opposed to coming in and doing the same old four to six [kilometer], eight sessions a week that I’ve been doing since I was seven years old,” he said. “All the people who said ‘this isn’t going to work, don’t do this’ – they’re all wrong,” “My instinct was right,” Issac said in his concluding statements.

However, December felt nothing different from July, as he was limited from the gold. Due to a false start being mis-communicated, Issac could not grab it even with a phenomenal performance. So, he walked out, again searching for a win.

A staunch comeback

Days passed, and Cooper had his eyes fixed on the Australian trials. It was his last chance to prove to the world that he was a champ, let alone slam the haters. And that is something he did. Featuring a perfect 53s swim, Issac Cooper bagged the gold in the 100m backstroke. Followed by that, he also spoke to a few news outlets, revealing his new strategy for better performance.

On average, a professional swimmer clocks 80 kilometers of practice a week in the pool. But compared to that, Cooper cut it down to 14, adding surfing and martial arts to the list. This somehow helped him to become a better swimmer, let alone have the perfect comeback. So now, the question is, will we see this Australian swimming champ nab some golds at the World Championships?
