Michael Phelps has dominated the swimming world even years after his retirement. Many records set by the swimming GOAT still remain untouched, speaking volumes about his unparalleled talent. However, in recent days one French contender has emerged as his heir to the throne. With a bold ambition to topple Phelps from all record-bearing pedestals, this young swimmer made waves at the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships, wiping the Baltimore Bullet’s name from the 400-meter IM in the record books.

Now two breakout stars from the United States have challenged the “French superfish” through their impeccable timing at the Swimming World Cup 2023. Joshua Brown and Gabe Manteufel were favorites in the 400-meter individual medley heats on October 8. The lineup had German swimmer Ramon Klenz but all the attention of the home crowd in Berlin was on the two American superstars. The European fans were eager to witness America’s swimming prowess and the US duo did not disappoint them.

Joshua Brown and Gabe Manteufel had eyes on the prize this morning. They were not only gearing for the win in the heats but also vying to post the world record time. In a pre-Olympic year, it is natural for the swimming talents to try and make a mark in the sport. Leon Marchand’s record time in the 400-meter IM is 4:02.50, which was the target for both the iconic men. Joshua Brown had the best start in the race from lane 1. His challenger was Jonas Clauss who was gunning for the victory. Brown was ready for the challenge and throttled down the pool briefly losing the edge in the butterfly leg and backstroke legs of the race.

The freestyle leg of the race was where Brown made his strategic move. He exerted all his energy into powerful strokes and opened up a full body-length distance between himself and Clauss. He reached the wall at 4.32.22 seconds while his rival came a close second at 4.34.74. His teammate Gabe Manteufel was not far behind, finishing fourth with time of 4.38.01. Joshua Brown looked at the camera and gave a cheeky smile to express his happiness at keeping his Olympic dreams alive.
