Michael Phelps is a household name. Even though he retired long back, the swimming Phenom remains a dominant name in the sport. With more than 20+ Olympic medals, upon retirement, he left behind a legacy that only a few could achieve. Starting his journey from the pools of Baltimore, who knew one day Phelps would earn worldwide fame as the “Baltimore Express.”

Experiences help a person learn better, and Phelps was no different. His professional commitment paved the way for him to go through a variety of experiences. In his book “Beneath the Surface” Phelps opened up about such experiences that he still recalls to date and wishes to “never do it again.”?

That one race that Phelps could never forget?

What would otherwise have been a mundane day for Phelps turned out to be an unforgettable day as the swimming GOAT forgot something essential. Talking about the same in his book, ‘Michael Phelps: Beneath the Surface’, he quotes, “the thing I remember most about that meet is what I forgot.”

Talking more about the incident that dates back to the time when he competed in his US Open swim meet in New York, Phelps realized that he hadforgotten my cap and goggles before the start of a race.” As it was a mistake that he had made for the first time in his career, the swimming star was left embarrassed.

Phelps quotes his honest feelings, saying, “This was a pretty embarrassing thing to do.” Not sure what to do next, he cluelessly looked at his mother and then at his coach Bob. Both realizing that he had missed out on his cap, and googles “shrugged” their shoulders. Phelps finished second in that race, but he returned with a valuable lesson for life.

Though the day did not go well for Phelps, that was a learning experience for him. Phelps learned a valuable lesson that day. Commenting on the same, the Olympic gold medalist adds, “it was one of those learning experiences.”

Elaborating further, he says how sometimes one learns from a book while sometimes one learns after hours for practice. Speaking about it further, he said, there are the times you’re so embarrassed by something, you know you’ll never do it again.”
