Is Team USA's psychological warfare against Australia a smart move or just unsportsmanlike?

After the first day of swimming in the Paris Olympics, the Australian camp is running ahead of Team USA with more gold medals. Furthermore, while proving the upper hand over the American swimming team, the Dolphins got over with skipper Katie Ledecky, as in the 400m free, Ariarne Titmus did the job. So now, what could be the best approach to making a comeback against the Yellow Jerseys? According to Michael Phelps, his countrymen can play the mind game to change the present atmosphere. Last year at the World Swimming Championships, Team Australia used the same ploy.

In his conversation with NBC News, the most decorated swimmer reminded that in 2023, the Australian swimmer Cate Campbell had claimed to find joy in defeating the Stars and Stripes squad in the pools. Rather, she added that the US camp had “the infernal cowbell they ring”. And she found it pleasant to stop the ringing of the cowbells by defeating them. Now noting that Phelps commented, “I hope Team USA rings those cowbells as loud as they can possibly ring them all meet long.”  That would not go well with the Dolphins, as plenty of swimming matches are on the cards in the coming weeks at the Paris Olympics, and the Baltimore Bullet has his favorites ready.

Counting his horses for the upcoming battles, Michael Phelps backed Kate Douglass, Jack Alexie, and Hunter Armstrong. Notably, Jack Alexie and Hunter Armstrong played a major role yesterday in giving the US swimming team its first gold medal at the Olympics. The 4x100m relay final also had the Australians as the opponents, but Caleb Dressel and his team members kept them away from catching the gold. Following the competition, both opposing groups were observed exchanging wishes with each other. According to Phelps, this has been the eternal story between these two sides.

In the same conversation, he mentioned, “when we’re in the pool yes, of course, we’re competitors, right?… But when we’re out of the pool, we’re friends.” Still, he suggested his successors not let the detractors go over them. Ultimately, the message could be echoed in the extended part of Michael Phelps’ words shared a few weeks ago.

On June 21 this year, NBC Olympics and Paralympics shared a video showing Michael Phelps taking his moment to analyze Kate Campbell’s words made after the 2023 World Swimming Championship in Fukuoka. The “sore losers” tag did not go well with the 23-time Olympic champion as he narrated the incidents he used to face at his time.

In his high time, the legend faced off with the rival camp, holding nothing back. Naturally, the Australian rival camp’s might was not less, as Ian Thorpe’s presence boosted them highly. But Phelps proved his mettle each time. His mindset proved to be the difference, as he conceded, “Somebody said that to me, I would lose it, I would literally make them eat every word they just said about me.” He now anticipates that someone will step up and defeat the Dolphins. It could be anyone, as the Team USA Swimming bunch does not lack names.

Katie Ledecky has already flaunted her preparedness to take on the opponents, saying, “We are ready, and we will show what we are capable of.” So now it’s show time at the Paris Olympics.
