Swimming demigod Michael Phelps was just 11 when he set on a voyage with coach Bob Bowman to manifest the Olympic dream into reality. Interestingly, as Phelps stands at the pinnacle of his vocation, coach Bowman took a moment to highlight one of the Flying Fish’s exceptional feats.

One such glory that this mentor-mentee duo has bagged was in 2008, when Phelps took home 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. Nonetheless, the swimming prodigy also holds number 8 as the most records set in a single event across multiple categories. Interestingly, to highlight this iconic number 8 spree, coach Bowman took to his Instagram handle to share the stats, and in turn, received the response from the man himself.

On 10th November, Swimming Stats posted the names of 10 athletes who have “Most world records set in a single event.” Nonetheless, the stats flaunted the athletes who set record in “Individual events only Long Course Meters.

Interestingly, Michael Phelps occupied three spots on the list, with eight records each made in the 200-meter fly, 200-meter individual medley, and 400-meter individual medley.

Following this, coach Bob Bowman, shared the picture on Instagram addressing Michael Phelps in the caption and penned, “We like 8s! Right @m_phelps00??” The swimming legend answered back on his Instagram story, writing, “Yes we do!!!”

However, Phelps is not the only American on the list. Don Schollander and Mark Spitz are also on the roster. Schollander is second on the list, with 11 records made in the 200-meter freestyle between 1962 and 1968. Mark Spitz has nine records in the 200-meter fly, which he created between 1967 and 1972. However, in 2008, Phelps chased Spitz record that he created in 1972.

It was the year 2008, when Phelps clinched 8 gold medals in respective categories: 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 200m medley, 400m medley, 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle, and 4x100m medley.

Michael Phelps had a successful Olympic campaign in 2008 at the Beijing Games. He won eight gold medals in China, but what was even more surprising was that Phelps created seven new records. This was a feat only ever achieved in 1972 by Mark Spitz.

Although Mark Spitz and Don Schollander have created more records than Michael Phelps in individual events, the latter has extended his dominance to three events. Thus, in total, the Baltimore Bullet has more records to his name.
