Michael Klim is one of the most decorated Australian swimmers. However, the Olympic gold medalist’s life came to a standstill when he was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease in 2020. The costs of medical assistance in today’s time are high. But treating a rare disease that has no cure costs even more.

Klim considers himself to be a part of the privileged group who have access to good medical facilities and can afford them. Recently, while talking with Dan Kennedy during a podcast, Klim gave a detailed narration of how he managed his finances throughout his treatments.

Recently, Klim appeared on the “Fitness & Lifestyle podcast with Dan Kennedy.” He spoke about his health struggles and the ways he is dealing with them. Klim was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease named CIDP. Kennedy asked Klim how he has been able to manage his expenses.

Klim elaborated that while the main medical treatment costs are high, the supplementary products are what cost much more than the treatment. Citing an example, the swimmer shared that his foot braces alone cost around $1000. Additionally, the flight fare and other travel expenses also cost a fortune to the swimmer. However, he appreciated the fact that some of the healthcare facilities are subsidized in his country.

Furthermore, Klim spoke about how his loved ones played a major role in his recovery. “I’m very fortunate Michelle my partner, you know she was literally just caring for me for last years and making sure I’m looked after. Same with my family, so there’s definitely an element of you know financial but also more like a resource point of view.” But what made Klim’s life turn upside down like this?

The first signs of ill health showed up in 2019 when Klim started feeling weird sensations in the lower half of his leg. However, the swimmer didn’t pay much attention at that time, thinking it was just the after-effects of his then-recent ankle surgery.

However, his health soon started depreciating as his real condition affected his nerves. Despite the various struggles, the fighter in him never gave up and fought back with full force.
