Kate Douglass dominates in the 200m Individual Medley

Over the past 11 months, Kate Douglass has shown her capabilities in the swimming world. With her latest triumph in the 200m individual medley, where she achieved a personal best time of 2 minutes and 7.05 seconds, Kate Douglass continues to soar. She left her competitors trailing, particularly distancing herself from Canadian Sydney Pickrem by an impressive 1.51 seconds.

Since March of the previous year, Kate Douglass has been on an extraordinary streak. She has secured two individual world titles, claimed an impressive seven medals in world championships, dominated the 2023 NCAA Championships with seven titles, including relay events, and most recently, shattered the American record in the 200m breaststroke. At just 22 years old, Douglass still has three more individual events to showcase her prowess in at these championships: the 50m and 100m freestyles, along with the 200m breaststroke. In achieving this feat, Kate Douglass joins Katie Hoff (who accomplished the same in 2005 and 2007) as the only other American to secure back-to-back world titles in this particular event.

As the Olympics approach, Douglass’s quest for gold in the 200m IM is influenced by the emergence of 17-year-old Canadian sensation, Summer McIntosh. Despite her absence from these world championships, the first held in an Olympic year. McIntosh, who has never competed in the 200m IM at worlds, made headlines last March with a blistering time of 2:06.89. This ranked her as the fourth-fastest woman in history in this event. In the upcoming Paris championships, the overlap between the women’s 800m freestyle and the 200m IM finals adds further intrigue. McIntosh holds the second-fastest time in history in the former event, behind only Katie Ledecky, despite never having competed in it at worlds.
