Swimming fans all around the world are eagerly waiting for the new year to arrive to witness two major events. 2024 will see the World Aquatics Swimming Championship in Doha and the Olympic Games in Paris. However, while both venues are preparing for the global contests, a social media post revealed the fate their predecessor has fallen to.

A Facebook page called ‘Abandoned Spaces’ showcased the poor condition of the abandoned swimming pool used in the 2016 Rio Olympics via a posy. The post carried the caption, “It’s a shame it wasn’t converted for recreational sport.” The neglected state of the facility made it look like a structure built decades ago. However, not even 10 years have passed since the 2016 Rio Olympics. The picture showcased the ghost of the same venue where Michael Phelps had bagged five gold medals and a silver.

Reacting to the image of the dilapidated swimming pool, a fan said, “This is the legacy of abandonment the Olympics seem to leave in its wake. Another fan expressed their angst by saying, “They leveled a neighborhood and evicted all the long-term residents to build it what a disgrace. That’s why I don’t support the IOC or FIFA. Zero morals all about the money.” One of the fans also vented their frustration but also offered a solution.

While everyone holds the Olympics in high regard, an enraged fan wrote, “The Olympics have become a complete monetary disaster. I haven’t watched for more than 15 years.” Commenting about the colossal wastage of materials and resources, a fan simply wrote, “That has to be one horrendous carbon footprint.”
