Kristóf Milák’s decision shocked everyone.

The anticipation of Milak’s participation at this year’s World Championships in July to be held at Fukuoka was very high. Amidst all the pomp, Milák made a heartbreaking announcement. The Olympian and world titleholder backed out of the tournament, stating an overall lack of mental and physical well-being. Milák doesn’t plan to defend his world titles in the men’s 100 and 200 butterfly events, which he won gloriously in Budapest during the 2022 finals. The news shocked the swimming community, as Milák had been a dominant force in the sport.

He said, “as much as I’d like to continue my winning streak that started in 2016, I’m not at the level physically or mentally right now to be among the best in the world.According to National Coach Csaba Sos, Milák’s training for both the Hungarian Nationals and the World Championships had not gone as anticipated. Despite being under a lot of pressure during his home country’s 2022 championships, Milák excelled, breaking his own world record in the 200-meter butterfly and winning gold in the 100-meter butterfly. Prior to this, he broke the same record by defeating the legendary Micheal Phelps.

Kristóf Milák, who was born on February 20, 2000, gained a name for himself as a swimmer early on. He conquered the world record long-course 200-meter butterfly as well as the European world record for the long-course 100-meter butterfly. Other than these and many more accolades he won a gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly and a silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2020 Summer Olympics proving the sky is the limit.

Michael Phelps’ long reign of 18 years as the world record holder in the 200-meter butterfly came to an end when Milák, then a 19-year-old youngling clocked in at an astonishing time of 1:50.73, surpassing Phelps’ time by 0.78 seconds. The world watched in awe as Milák’s defeated the legend at the world championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Phelps himself expressed both frustration and admiration for the young swimmer, acknowledging the incredible race Milák had put together.

Milák and Dressel’s withdrawal from World Championships leaves the swimming world disheartened. The battle still continues with top contenders Liendo, Casas, and Dressel.
