“I Feel Extremely Blessed”: Terrifying Wildfires Lead Maui Teenagers To Find a Swimming Pool Home

The devastating Maui wildfires have wreaked havoc in the country. Since the 1918 forest fire, this disaster has been one of the deadliest ones faced by the United States. The expected death toll from the fire is more than 1,000. The residents of Lahaina have faced the worst of this calamity.

However, a pair of teenagers who were vacationing in Lahaina were able to save their lives. The two teenagers, who are also best friends, escaped the terrifying wildfires and found a swimming pool to save themselves. The pair was later rescued by the emergency services.

Two teenagers saved by getting into a swimming pool

Last week, while vacationing in Maui, two women were able to save themselves from fire after finding a swimming pool. Two women, Kristina Lee-Garrido and her friend, while traveling in Maui, rented a unit in Lahaina. Amid the forest fires in Maui last week, the unit was also enveloped in thick smoke. The best friends quickly grasped the gravity of the situation, grabbed their necessary items, and tried to escape the fires. The pair who were trying their best to save their lives lost each other twice in the gray, thick smoke, only to find each other near a swimming pool that ended up saving their lives. While talking about the situation, Lee-Garrido told the NBC Bay area, “I feel extremely blessed right now.”

Upon reaching a safe place, Garrido tried to contact emergency services. After contacting the services using the SOS features on their phones, the pair was advised not to move out of the swimming pool. However, after three hours of waiting and battling to save their lives, the thick smoke made breathing difficult. Amid this, Lee-Garrido pinged the services again. “Fifteen minutes later, three firefighters busted through a gate” and got the pair towards safety. Nonetheless, apart from these two women, many innocent people lost their lives in the Wildfire.

Deaths caused by the Maui forest fires

The wildfires have caused the deaths of many. On Monday, an estimated 100 people were declared dead by the wildfires. Sadly, this number has increased since then, as only 32 percent of Hawaiian State Lahaina’s burnt area has been searched yet. Due to this devastating situation, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the First Lady of the country, Jill Biden, will be visiting Maui. The travel is expected to happen on August 21.
