Is Katie Ledecky the greatest female swimmer of all time, or does she still have more to prove?

From debuting in the London Olympics at the age of 15 to bagging seven Olympic gold medals, 21 World Championship titles, and multiple records, Katie Ledecky is one of the most celebrated names in the swimming domain. Born on March 17th, 1997, in Washington, DC, the 27-year-old Katie’s journey from virtually unknown to a swimming sensation was commendable!

The Olympian’s mother, who swam in college herself, inspired her to take up swimming. Ledecky has been widely appreciated for becoming an Olympian champion at every distance between 200 m and 1500 m. Compared to the average height of 5.9-foot women swimmers on the American swim team, Katie stands out slightly taller at 6.0-foot.

In 2012, she won her first Olympic gold medal in the 800m freestyle in London. She continued her successful career by winning four gold medals in Rio 2016 in the 200m, 400m, 800m, and 4x200m freestyle events. Katie completed her graduation with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a minor in political science from Standford University. Her family includes her father, David Ledecky; her mother, Mary Gen; and her older brother, Michael. Katie’s father works as an attorney; his educational background includes degrees from the prestigious Harward University and Yale Law School. During her college days, her mother was a swimmer, and she swam for the University of New Mexico. Currently, Mary Gen is an administrator at Georgetown Hospital.

Mary Gen’s swimming background has inspired both of her kids to pursue swimming. Michael is also a professional swimmer who played a very crucial role in the introduction of swimming to Katie’s life. Inspired by her brother, the young Katie Ledecky started her swimming career at the age of six!
