Katie Ledecky celebrated her 27th birthday on March 17. Though her youth defies the traditional notion of an elder stateswoman, she eagerly embraces the role model and advocate mantle, particularly for women and girls in sports. Ledecky’s reign extends beyond the Olympics. She owns world records in both 800m and 1500m freestyle, dominating not just long courses but short courses as well. While the Olympics introduced her to the world stage, her record-breaking achievements had already made her an unstoppable force.

Her Olympic odyssey began with a stunning upset. At just 15 in London in 2012, she snatched gold in the demanding 800m freestyle. This was just the opening act. Four years later in Rio, Ledecky cemented her Olympic legend. She became the Games’ most decorated female athlete, conquering the competition with four golds and a silver, all while obliterating two world records. But she didn’t stop there. Even in the 2020 Olympics, she rewrote history. She clinched the title of the most decorated U.S. female athlete and secured a unique feat as the first American female swimmer to claim an individual event gold across three consecutive Olympiads. And till now, she’s rising and shining. But Walsh isn’t so easy to beat as well.

Gretchen Walsh, who has much more to explore as she’s just 21, has nevertheless emerged as a standout figure in American competitive swimming. Holding multiple world junior and American records, Walsh has showcased exceptional talent and versatility in various swimming disciplines. Notably, she secured her place in swimming history by becoming the fastest female freshman in the NCAA, achieving remarkable feats such as clocking 20.95 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and claiming the NCAA title in the 100-yard freestyle with a swift time of 46.05 seconds in 2022. 2023 proved to be another year of triumph for Walsh. She dominated the NCAA Division I Championships, securing victories in both the 100-yard backstroke and freestyle events. These wins were even more impressive as she shattered American records in both races.

Gretchen Walsh rewrote the record books on March 21st, 2024 again. She obliterated both the NCAA and American records in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a blistering 20.41 in the morning prelims. This wasn’t just any record; it eclipsed her own outstanding time of 20.57 set just a month prior at the ACC Championships. Even then, Walsh had hinted at her dominance by setting a new preliminary record of 20.77 before securing the even faster 20.57 finish. If Walsh defeats Ledecky, it wouldn’t be unprecedented. We’ve already witnessed a rising star outshine Ledecky earlier this year as well.

The epic rivalry that’s redefining the sport

Swimming witnessed a changing of the tides on February 8th, 2024. Katie Ledecky, the undisputed queen of the 800m freestyle for over a decade, saw her reign challenged at the USA Swimming Sectionals. Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh made waves with her performance in the 800m freestyle. She clocked the line in at an 8:11.39. While Ledecky finished with a respectable 8:17.12, the evening belonged to McIntosh, whose performance signaled a potential new era in distance freestyle.

While at the previous year’s NCAA Women’s Championships, Maggie Mac Neil triumphed over Gretchen Walsh, seizing the record in the 50 freestyle. However, Walsh quickly rebounded by delivering a remarkable performance, setting a new record in the 100 backstroke, solidifying her name in swimming history. In a sport where challenges are abundant, their rivalry continues to elevate the competition to thrilling heights.
