Watching athletes turn into doting parents is always a treat for fans. Recently, legendary swimmer Michael Phelps put up a picture of him playing cards with his eldest son, Boomer. Although the Olympian swimmer won countless world records and accolades, it seems like a game of cards knocked him over.

Throughout the series of pictures and amidst some expressive faces, it was evident that Boomer was the winner. So how did the highly competitive Michael Phelps feel about losing against his son? While the swimmer might be fierce in the pool, he seems elated on the card table!
As a father, Michael Phelps is willing to lose
Here’s an anecdote about the legendary swimmer as narrated by his mother. When Phelps was young, he hated to lose. So much so that he wouldn’t even let his grandmother win in a game of Rummy. While Ms. Debbie Phelps, his mother, would chide him for his attitude, she realized her son’s big obsession with winning. But if that’s the case, how did the champion swimmer come around to compete against his own son?

The Instagram post by the champion showed him with his 6-year-old son, Boomer, sitting at a table with a deck of cards splayed across the table. The series of photos hinted at Boomer winning against his father. Phelps, who once refused to let his grandma win, accepted loss at the hands of his son.

Phelps called his son “a future card shark”. Perhaps fatherhood caused the champion swimmer to willingly give up his winning streak to let the spotlight shine on someone else. And who better than his own blood? Phelps’ dotting ways might give rise to a new card shark in town after all!

It’s not a secret that Michael Phelps puts immense pressure on himself to succeed. Although the athlete has been through a lot of struggles in the form of mental health issues, he always emerged as a champion. His hunger to win helped him persevere against all odds.
