The 2023 Swimming World Cup has come to an end after weeks of ecstatic excitement. Swimmers like Michael Andrew, Kaylee McKeown, Qin Haiyang, and several others have risen to prominence in the last few days. However, amid all this adrenaline rush that the swimming world has experienced lately, a fresh update from an Olympian swimmer has left everyone in tears, as a swimming veteran is set to retire after almost 14 years of an illustrious swimming career. Throughout her swimming career, the athlete has consistently excelled. Her recent performance at the World Championships only added to her impressive list of achievements.

Now the swimmer has finally decided to hang up her swimming goggles and bid adieu to a decorated swimming career. This update has sent ripples across the internet and the swimming community as a champion exits the pool and embarks on the next chapter of her life.

On Friday, the Japanese Swimming Federation announced that two-time Olympic bronze medalist Yukiko Inui has decided to retire. The World Aquatics Twitter handle has also confirmed the news with a post made on Tuesday. They wrote, “Doubble World Champion in Fukuoka Yukiko INUI has announced her retirement after 14 years on the international stage, from her first appearance in 2009 at the World Championships.” Inui, who has participated in three consecutive Olympics, has numerous accolades under her belt. 

She will also address her retirement during a press conference that is scheduled for October 27. Inui is one of those swimmers who has been an active participant in both the women’s duet and the women’s team for Japan. During the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, the Omihachiman native won the first gold medal for her nation in both the solo technical routine and the solo free routine. To add more to her swimming wall of fame, the Japanese prodigy also achieved some significant milestones at this year’s World Aquatics Championships.

When she replicated her world champion feat with panache

In the 2023 World Aquatics Championships organized in Fukuoka, Japan, 32-year-old Inui etched history when she clinched her second gold medal in artistic swimming while performing exceptionally in the non-Olympic solo free routine. If that was not enough, she again stood atop the podium in a non-Olympic solo technical routine, won two world championship gold medals, and replicated her 2022 Budapest world championships performance. Her swansong was equally impactful, set to stay in people’s hearts for ages to come.
