Defying odds and doing the unthinkable is what the swimming icon Nathan Adrian did and he did it with absolute finesse. After registering the win against cancer, American swimming prodigy, Natghan Adrian stated, ?I have to be much more cognizant about each and every movement to relearn it,? to the San Francisco Chronicle. This was about his losing body weight and touch in the game. Ironically, the comeback path didn’t end for him as a fairy tale as the rest of his career. But, among all these, the legendary swimmer never lost his motivation.?

Nathan Adrian explained the process of his battle with testicular cancer several times. In each of those times, swimming came out as the catalyst for his recovery. The five-time Olympic champion took a little time to describe how he could continue swimming in his recovery time.?

Fares Ksebati, CEO of MySwimPro, posted a YouTube video titled “How Swimming Helped Nathan Adrian Beat Cancer“. It came out as a rare occasion for Nathan Adrian, where the legendary swimmer had jotted down his recovery process.

Speaking on the role of swimming, the legendary freestyle swimmer made a tribute to his swimming in that video at first. Then, he narrated the initial journey, “it was testicular cancer and the first thing that I had to do was swim. I felt like home”. But he dismissed that the need for his swimming continuation was for any physical exercise purpose.?

Rather, Nathan Adrian admitted that swimming used to provide him with mental support at that moment. He recalled that it was not the first time he used swimming to get mental help.

He summed it up as “I had a couple of surgeries. I swam between all of them, and it wasn’t because I needed to swim for any physiological reason. It was because I needed to swim for my mental health”.?

Nathan Adrian’s tryst with swimming?

After returning from the cancer, Nathan Adrian made several attempts to relive his Olympic dream. In 2019, the former US champion in Freestyle couldn’t make it into the final berth of a few championships. But that could not hinder his engagement with swimming. In 2020, Nathan Adrian took flight again by competing in the Olympic Trials for Tokyo. But that didn’t bring the expected result for him.?

However, in 2023, Nathan participated in the US Masters Swimming Spring National Championships. In off-court, the 8-time Olympic medalist has shared his swimming engagement by opening AC Swim Club. Nathan has himself admitted his bonding with swimming terrifically, no matter if it gives him one more Olympic medal. Explaining that bonding in the video, he confidently sounded, “…. that is something that I take with me forever. Reason one of the why I will continue to swim forever”.?
