Arguably, no one has achieved success like Michael Phelps has in swimming, and his records are there to prove it. Even though he spent all his life by the pool, the 23-time Olympic gold medalist is still perfectly aware of the dangers of water, even in a seemingly normal swimming pool. He recently shared a scary statistic that involved kids and swimming pools, but the intention was not to scare; rather make every parent informed about it and take caution. As a father of three kids, Phelps knows that he has to.
As per a survey, around 23% of children have died in a swimming pool, that too when their parents are around. Even though the percentage seems less, the numbers are actually scarily high. It accounts for as many as 4000 drownings annually. The Baltimore Bullet wants everyone to take note of this.

Michael Phelps recently took to his Instagram stories and shared a link to a critical piece of news. The news piece was originally shared by NDPA – National Drowning Prevention Alliance, where they posted a detailed description of this grim fact and how to prevent it. An image of a pool with the caption read, “23% of child drownings happen during a family gathering near a pool”.
Family gatherings are an occasion for a cheery atmosphere, with merriment all around. People are busy mingling and socializing with one another at such gatherings and parties. Often such events happen near a swimming pool, where the kids are playing. This is exactly when such drownings happen, ironically enough, in front of all.

Why it happens and how can it be prevented?
The Instagram post by NDPA went, “During family gatherings, there is a lot of distraction and commotion. Children can sneak off to water features unnoticed”. However, such unfortunate circumstances can easily be prevented if only certain measures are always maintained. A link in the bio further detailed those 5 steps to prevent such tragedy – “Barriers & Alarms”, “Supervision”, “Water Competency”, “Life Jackets”, and “Emergency Preparation”.

Each of these steps is explained in little more detail, and if every parent keeps them in mind when their kids are in the pool, the percentage of drowning victims can be reduced from 23% to a negligible number. Michael Phelps, who has previously opened up about several issues including his mental health, has now done another great service to society by informing them about another important fact.
