Artistic Swimming to witness change: Men called it worth embracing!

Artistic swimming has been a long-standing part of the Olympics. This is only one aspect of sports where gender equality concerns men rather than women. Artistic swimming has always been put forth as the sport of women’s dominance. Yet with ample other stereotypes that have been bursted, the inclusion of men in sports was something swimmers like Bill May were manifesting. Paris Olympics has opened the doors for the long-awaited inclusivity of men. As a stance on pluralism and the evolution of this respective domain, the decision of inclusion was welcomed with open arms and a united front, sans much resistance from the swimming fraternity.

Bill May was one of the voices advocating for change, which was “once considered the impossible dream,” as he quotes. Not just the men in the domain, but also their female counterparts responded positively to the decision. Anita Alvarez said, “Having the inclusion of both males and females will make it more open for young boys and girls to dream of being in the Olympics.” This move can change the way females, males, or audiences look at artistic swimming as a sport. It will be interesting to witness how the changed dimension brings light to the glory of artistic swimming! Will this salt to the earth sport gain momentum and emerge from the shadows?
