The 2024 Paris Olympics is fast approaching, and the pure champion energy a Briton swimmer runs on isn’t dwindling anytime soon. The World Championships multi-gold medalist Matt Richards has big plans for the upcoming Olympics, vying for multiple gold medals, and aiming to win individually. However, he has more far-reaching plans for the Olympics, tied up with his fiancée and fellow GB swimmer Emily Large.

Richards and Large have big plans up their sleeves that tie their professional, athletic, and personal lives in a knot. These are a few crucial months for them to build a fairy tale moment, from the Olympics to their impending marriage and it is endearing.

Richards and Large tied in holy matrimony via love and Olympic dream

Multiple things are at stake for Matt Richards this Olympics. He is intently focused on his fiancée, Emily Large’s attempt at her first Olympic qualification in the 200m butterfly race. The pair share a unique love story that is intricately interconnected with their Olympic ambitions. They are seeking to compete together in Paris, the city beautifully tagged as the City of Love in August. It will culminate with their marriage in Hereford just a few days after the conclusion of the Paris Olympics.

Elaborating on the entire competitive fairy-tale plan, Richards reflected on the trials and tribulations they have faced earlier. “We wanted to be together in Tokyo but she just missed out on qualifying in the event before I qualified.“ He recalled that it was indeed a tough situation for them as a couple – “it scarred both of us. But it only drives us on more.”

Hence, they are not ready to give up just yet. They are fully focused on giving their best for Paris 2024, proving “what we can do on the world stage together.” He remarked during an interview, “I’m very lucky: I can’t sing her praises high enough.” As a couple, they are ride or die and are ready to face all hurdles together and be the backbone of one another. Richards’ dalliance will truly set a narrative for healthy couples and this will stand the test of time.

Richards is a world champion, but the competition doesn’t stop there. While he is building himself with grit and determination enroute  Paris, aiming to clinch five gold medals, he has yet another hurdle to face.

The competition for a spot in the 200m freestyle in the British swimming team is quite tough, as there are only two spots open. And Richards also has two teammates in the running for said spot – Tom Dean and Duncan Scott. While there is a lot at stake, there is a renewed sense of motivation in Richards to own up to the situation and share aspirations with his fiancée this Olympics.
