In a recent interview, the father of three reflects on his mental health journey and the ongoing push for industry-wide change ahead of the seventh anniversary of his landmark Sports Illustrated cover story.

Michael Phelps opens up about his kids’ dreams

Phelps is considered an elite in the sports eternity. When asked whether he would encourage the younger generation to pursue a career in “elite sports,” the Olympic Gold medalist had an honest answer. Citing his example, he said, “I think if they want to, yeah, 100%. I think for me one of the reasons I was able to have the career that I did and the longevity that I did. My mom never pushed me to do anything.”

Following what he has seen, Phelps confessed that if the kids tell him that they want to do something, he would help them out. All he wants them to be happy. Adding further, he states, “I want them to be happy at the end of the day, and I don’t want my kids to chase my dreams. I want them to chase their dreams.”

Phelps helps kids with the aid of his foundation named “Michael Phelps Foundation.” A strong advocate of mental health, post-retirement, the Olympian devotes his time to philanthropic activities. He helps the younger generation grow up as better individuals.
