One of her many tattoos, Ariarne Tirmus has “fearless” emblazoned on her foot with ink, which bears an important meaning. When asked, what inspired her to get this design, Titmus cited, “I was thinking about this for a while, and I wanted something to kind of like….it’s related to my swimming.” As she continued explaining the relevance, it drew a strong connection with her journey as a professional swimmer.

Fearlessness seems to be a trait that Titmus imbibed through the ebb and flow of her swimming career. She mentions, “I feel like as a swimmer, I have always been quite fearless as a racer. I always go out there and put myself out there, and not being afraid to go hard and I guess die in the backend.” This is why, the mettlesome swimmer chose for the word to be inscribed on her with ink.

But, is it just the choice of the word that she put all her mental energy into? Well, apparently not. Titmus even strategically decided the placement of the tattoo on her body. To this, she explains, “I’ve got the word fearless written on my front foot, the one that I dive with, so that when I look down and dive, I see the word!” While some might call that cliche, Titmus admittedly says that it is cheesy. Nonetheless, she is equally proud that this is that one nice thing that can just have with her.
When Titmus set the 400m freestyle world record last year at the Swimming World Championships in Fukuoka, she commented on the significance of her tattoo. She mentioned how it flashes right before her eyes every time she prepares for a dive. However, that’s not all. Titmus also has another design inked on her, which holds deep significance for her as well.

They say that the more you focus on what inspires you, the more energy you have to give your best. Perhaps Ariarne Titmus’ rationale for her second tattoo is inspired by a similar thought. On the outer corner of her right wrist, Titmus has the revered Olympic rings inked—a proud reminder of the grand stage she first graced in 2021.
However, it’s not unusual for athletes to turn their bodies into a canvas for Olympic rings tattoos. Many, including Kate Douglass, Caleb Dressel, and others, adorn this design as a symbol of their Olympian status. Ariarne Titmus is no exception.
