After the Olympics wrapped up, Chinese swimmer Qin Haiyang is facing serious trouble! After winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the men’s 4x100m medley, the 25-year-old athlete has been accused of cheating on his pregnant fiancee and soliciting prostitutes while serving in the military. His fiancee took to Weibo on October 7 to post a detailed exposé of him. She claimed Qin had affairs with fans and synchronized swimmers.

Things took an even darker turn when she suggested breaking up, and Qin allegedly threatened her with intimate videos to get her to forgive him. To make matters worse, she said his family didn’t step in to stop him, instead asking her to be more understanding. She also revealed that she had been financially supporting Qin, buying him luxury items and even sending gifts to his fans.

Despite everything she did, she questioned whether he cared about anything other than the attractiveness of his fans. A successful entrepreneur who had previously sponsored awards for him, she expressed her disappointment and called on Qin to take responsibility and apologize. In response, Qin’s Weibo account has been placed in protective mode, blocking further interactions.

Qin Haiyang’s management has hit back at the allegations, calling them nothing but malicious slander meant to ruin the Olympic champion’s reputation. In a statement, they firmly denied the claims, which were posted by an account claiming to be Qin’s fiancée, labeling them as completely false. The management team stressed that these allegations were an effort to tarnish the reputation of the 25-year-old swimmer. They also indicated that they are collecting evidence and might involve the public security bureau if needed, suggesting that legal steps could be taken soon.

During the 2023 World Aquatics Championships held in Japan, Qin etched his name in history by achieving a feat. Being the swimmer to clinch victory in the 50, 100, and 200 meter breaststroke races all in one season. Additionally, he secured another gold medal in the mixed 4×100-meter medley relay event.

During two Asian Games events in which Qin competed as a swimmer and won a total of nine medals—six gold medals, along with one each of silver and bronze—he has established his reputation as a figure within the swimming community. However, even before the Olympics, Qin found himself at the center of another controversy.

Qin Haiyang among 11 swimmers linked to doping scandal

China made headlines when it announced that it would send 11 swimmers linked to a major doping scandal to the Paris Olympics. This decision followed the official naming of its squad for the Games, which sparked considerable discussion. In April, it was revealed that 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for the heart drug trimetazidine (TMZ), known for its performance-enhancing properties, ahead of the delayed 2021 Tokyo Games. The swimmers avoided sanctions because the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted the Chinese authorities’ claim that the positive tests were due to food contamination. This leniency led to significant controversy and criticism, especially from the United States.

Among the athletes heading to Paris were some big names like butterfly specialist Zhang Yufei, who had won two gold medals in Tokyo, and Wang Shun, another gold medalist. Qin Haiyang, a multiple world champion and the 200m breaststroke record holder, was also included in the squad. The initial reports about the positive tests emerged in April, revealing that the swimmers had tested positive at a domestic competition in late 2020 and early 2021.

Chinese anti-doping officials stated that the swimmers had accidentally ingested the drug through contaminated food, which meant no disciplinary action was taken. This leniency raised eyebrows, particularly in the U.S., where officials suggested a potential cover-up—a claim that both WADA and Chinese authorities denied.

Chinese authorities maintained that these findings were due to contaminated meat, while WADA noted that the levels found were well below their minimum reporting threshold. In response, China’s anti-doping body criticized the media for what it described as a violation of ethics. With everything going on, it seems like this year has been pretty tough for Qin Haiyang as he tries to balance his impressive accomplishments with the ongoing controversies.
