Can Ariarne Titmus ever surpass Katie Ledecky in the 800m, or is Ledecky unbeatable?

For the most part, the main motivation behind an athlete’s efforts is the medals they rack up at tournaments. But not always. Sometimes, medals take a backseat while personal milestones become the driving force for an athlete to keep pummeling forward. For Ariarne Titmus, the 2024 Paris Olympics became one such occasion, despite being subdued by American arch-rival Katie Ledecky at that moment.

The rivalry between Titmus and Ledecky has become the stuff of legend within the swimming community. The duo continuously pushes each other to their limits, often resulting in nail-biting moments for the fans. In one such race at the French capital, Katie emerged as the narrow victor, but the Australian harbors no qualms about the outcome.

In a recent interview with The Project, Ariarne reminisced why the women’s 800m freestyle race at the 33rd Olympic Games will go down as one of the greatest moments of her professional career, despite being handed a defeat in the event by Katie Ledecky. In the YouTube video, Titmus was heard talking about her experience in the City of Love and why the silver in the 800m free is something she will always hold dear in her heart. “Obviously the golds are amazing…but definitely, I think I’m most proud of my 800. I just took it out, I was fearless, I wasn’t afraid, I did my new PB!” smiled the 23-year-old Tasmanian swimmer.

Her sincere confession prompted her interviewers to lead a round of loud applause, and the joy was evident on Titmus’ face as she looked content with her accomplishment. In the women’s 800m freestyle race in Paris, Ledecky claimed the gold, finishing in 8:11.04, while Ariarne touched the wall in 8:12.29 to secure the silver and ensure her own place on the podium.

With that, the Australian star set a new personal best in the distance, breaking her previous mark of 8:13.59, which she had achieved at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England. Naturally, her performance on such a grand stage was a special moment, even if she didn’t stand on the top spot of the podium. However, given how often these two have crossed paths over the years, this surely won’t be the last time they meet, and Titmus will have the chance to set the record straight soon enough.

Fans were treated to more than one showdown between the two in Paris

The intense rivalry between Katie and Ariarne has become the stuff of legends for swimming connoisseurs worldwide. The two constantly push each other to the limit, making the margin for error incredibly narrow—where even a minor slip-up can cause irreparable damage in the race. With that in mind, both stars are always cautious about their performances and every detail when they meet in the pool. During the women’s 400m freestyle race at the Paris Games, the pair found themselves at the center of confusion regarding their lane assignments. Despite being placed in lane five, Titmus, who entered the arena before Katie, mistakenly dropped her belongings in the bucket for lane four, which had coincidentally been assigned to Ledecky. While Ledecky’s priority was to make sure she and her colleague weren’t disqualified from the race for the mix-up, many surmised it was a kind of mind game on Ariarne’s part.

The speculations were given more wind after Ledecky won bronze in the race, while Titmus went on to claim gold. But Ledecky showed her calm as she handled the situation before the start of the race. “I told her, ‘All good, all good,’ because she was freaking out. I didn’t want her to feel bad or anything. That was no big deal. I didn’t want either of us to get disqualified for swimming in the wrong lane,” Katie said later. Titmus managed to secure yet another victory over the Americans as the Australian women’s team defeated Team USA in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, clinching the gold medal.
