All these achievements place him well above his competitors. Until now, nobody has come close to the number of records he has. Despite his glorious career, life has not always been easy for him.

The most decorated Olympian once spoke about his parent’s divorce. Phelps’ parents separated when he was just a kid, too young to understand the situation properly. It was really hard on him as he waited for his father to return.

As a kid, Michael Phelps was unaware of how divorce works. He was confused when his mom told him that his father would live?separately henceforth.

?I heard my mom explain to me that my dad really wasn?t going to live with us anymore, but it didn?t make sense,??Phelps said, and continued,??Dad must have gone out to get something.??Young Phelps wondered if his father might have gone out to get something for the family. Phelps, being completely unaware of the meaning of divorce and separation, made him confused.

?I used to bounce into our den and wait anxiously for my dad to get off the computer so I could play a game,??Phelps said, and continued,??Suddenly I didn?t have to wait anymore.??He always used to hop into his den and wait for his dad to complete his work so he could play some games on his computer. But this time it was different, as young Phelps didn’t have to wait, as his dad didn’t live with him anymore. That was the moment when he realized that he won’t come back.

Even after learning that his parents had divorced, Michael Phelps needed answers. He even asked questions regarding his mother and his sisters, but everyone was silent.

His mom and dad were together for a long time since they were kids. Both of his parents grew up in small industrial towns in Maryland. They were even high school sweethearts. But things weren’t as easy as always. In the end, they did separate, which left an impact on Phelps and made him wonder how life works.
