“Are You Single?”: Michael Phelps’ Candid Reaction to a Female Fan’s Question Once Broke the Crowd into Laughter

American swimming legend Michael Phelps is one of the most decorated and famous Olympians in history. The 28-time Olympic medallist is called one of the greatest of the Olympics.

Phelps’ lean body and broad shoulders did not just help in the pool, but also attracted a lot of women outside of it.  Once, early in his career, Phelps’ reply to a girl’s candid question left the crowd in a fit of laughter and cheering.

Michael Phelps was asked a personal question in public

Phelps gained fame early in his career, as he achieved new records every year and constantly climbed the ladder to success. This also made Phelps famous among the people, and his handsome looks attracted a lot of female attention.

Phelps released his autobiography Beneath the Surface in 2004 and then re-released it a few years later. In this book, the swimming legend shared stories from his personal and sporting life. In one of the chapters, Phelps recalled a funny incident from a live interactive session with his fans. A female audience member got candid with the legendary swimmer.

In the book, while narrating the story he said, “A girl asked the second question. ‘Hi, Michael,’ she said, as muffled laughter spread through the crowd in anticipation of her question. After a long pause, she asked, ‘Are you single?”” However, Phelps’ reply to this question broke the audience member, as they were not expecting the swimmer to answer that question seriously. He wrote, “I replied that I was, and for a minute I thought somebody had turned a mouse loose in the room. Whoa, this is getting out of hand.”

Phelps had not expected the crowd to react so excitingly to his answer and was left surprised by it. However, the Olympic legend later got used to such reactions, especially around his female fan following.

Phelps and his wife Nicole Johnson’s love story

In 2007, Phelps first met his now-wife Nicole Johnson at an ESPY Award, where Johnson was his guide for the show. However, an F1 fanatic, Johnson was not pleased to be the legendary swimmer’s guide.

To her surprise, Phelps and Johnson had many things in common, and they instantly hit it off. Soon, the lovely couple got close to each other and started dating. However, Phelps’ increasing fame after the 2002 Olympics affected their relationship, and the two drifted apart.
