The Swimming World Cup 2023 has been sort of a disappointment for the American swimmers. In a kind of topsy-turvy situation, the most promising swimmers of Team USA faced huge setbacks on the first two days of the Berlin meet. Interestingly, these swimmers were part of World Aquatics’ “Elite 11” squad that was expected to dominate the competition. However, contradicting all surmisings, these athletes were unable to make their mark in the competition. Among them was once a multi-talented American swimmer who faced terrible challenges of his own in Berlin.

Whenever one thinks of versatility, one name in the swimming world comes to mind. Nic Fink is a 9-5 employee at an Atlanta-based utility company but somehow still finds time to compete in elite competitions. The 2023-24 season especially the Swimming World Cup 2023 was an important meet in the Olympic hopeful’s career, but with the recent losses, his chance of making it to Paris may be slipping by.

As mentioned before, Nic Fink was touted for dominance at the Berlin meet of the Swimming World Cup 2023. World Aquatics promoted his participation with exclusive interviews. During one such correspondence, he revealed, “I moved to Dallas with my wife, Mel (USA Olympian 2016) over the summer.  It’s never fun to move; it was a pain in the butt, but it’s over now…A new coach, new team, new area… I  think all of that is pretty exciting. Now that we are set up and that I have been training, we have gotten into a pretty good rhythm”. The American champion went through all this chaos in order to get in the best shape before the 2024 Paris Olympics.

His contention at the Swimming World Cup was also part of this self-same plan. However, he suffered a series of losses starting with the 100-meter breaststroke against China’s Qin Haiyang. The latter made the World Cup record with a finish at 57.69 seconds. His dominant performance left both Nic Fink, the American record holder, and Adam Peaty the world record holder in shock. Apart from these recent blotches, Fink has an otherwise stellar record.

Nic Fink’s swimming legacy

Nicolas “Nic” Fink has won the world champion title in the breaststroke events five times during his illustrious career. Besides that, he also holds the 4×100 meter medley relay and 4×50 meter mixed medley relay world record. He has earned medals and made other records in many elite swimming competitions but the glory on the biggest stage at the Olympics has eluded him. He failed to make the Olympic team twice in 2012 and 2016. In 2021, he finally got the opportunity to compete at the Summer Olympics but could not make a huge impact.
