After the excitement of the Paris Olympics, the action in swimming shifts to the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup. The competition kicks off with its first stop in Shanghai from October 18 to 20, bringing all the razzmatazz to this lively city. After Shanghai, the swimmers will head to Incheon, South Korea, and then wrap up the tour in Singapore. But there’s more than just races happening—there’s a new effort to preserve the legacies of swimming champions. It’s not just about the battles in the pool anymore, but also about celebrating and remembering the greats who have dominated the sport.

Fort Lauderdale town in Florida is known as the base of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and Museum (ISHOF). This private American institution, acknowledged by World Aquatics, serves as a knowledge hub for the study of swimming history both domestically and internationally. It aims to educate generations about that history and culture. The mission of ISHOF signifies that flavor in its maxim that stands to be Every Child A Swimmer. Yet, now, the institute itself felt a need to go under redevelopment.

Since its emergence in 1965, ISHOF has witnessed several changes in its formation and working methods. But this time, the authority has raised a massive sum of $54.4 million to add several new buildings to the existing structures. The initial map is ready as the local Fort Lauderdale City Commission has come forward with noteworthy steps. Apart from the government wing, a few more organizations have shaken hands to shape the Swimming Hall of Fame project.

In this effort, MACQ Holdings stands to be exceptional by providing the aforementioned sum as the loan for the redevelopment project. However, the supreme planning body, Arquitectonica, is on its way to flag off the $218 million project on October 16, according to Commercial Observer. That might seem like a lot of money for a building that already has two enormous structures at 501 Seabreeze Boulevard. Then what generates the need for such a staggering amount?

Per the proposal, the new project includes five-story buildings. Among those two lofty buildings, the west one will house a museum gift shop, exhibition space, a cafe, a parking garage, a teaching pool, and an arrangement for visitors to enjoy a sumptuous meal on the rooftop. The building at the eastern front will not be less attractive.

The plan of the structure shows the eastern wing giving space to a museum, a cafeteria, a huge office space, and a roof deck. Altogether, the new formations will span over 331,000 square feet. The local city commission has already authorized the required ground lease. Nonetheless, the redevelopment project is part of a long process that has already been active for the last several years.

Will the $218 million ISHOF project redefine swimming history, or is it just a flashy makeover?

Have an interesting take?

In December 2020, Swimming World Magazine came up with a plea, asking swimming enthusiasts to donate money to the redevelopment project. In 2017, ISHOF merged its operations with the swimming news outlet, hoping to increase its outreach among the fans. Since then, the magazine has played an essential role in boosting the campaign. However, in 2020, the news outlet asked for donations to restructure the existing museum in ISHOF. In the coming days, the structure at Fort Lauderdale went through a wholesome change.

According to published reports, in the last few years, the project has spent an amount of $46 million. As a result, the vast property has shed its previous rusty look. Now an 89-foot modern dive tower had replaced the old establishment. The service has also gone through changes, as now the social media wings of ISHOF have come as useful tools. After incorporating all these switchings, it is time to embrace a new form in the inner establishment. Are you thrilled to imagine that? Let us know.
