Katie Ledecky and Abbey Weitzeil are the two strongest contenders for the World Champion title from the U.S. Ledecky has been enjoying a good season so far. Weitzeil, on the other hand, had to face disappointment in 2022 on account of not making it to the World Championship squad. As the World Championships drew closer, fans waited eagerly. Who among the two top female swimmers from the U.S. would take the lead? Weitzeil’s performance this Tuesday in Indianapolis answered her fans question.

Abbey Weitzeil scored her record best time of 52.92 in the preliminary race. Her previous record was 52.99, which she scored in the Tokyo Olympics. This is a major achievement ahead of the Paris Olympics. Will this score be enough to redeem the swimmer for her poor performance at the U.S. International Team Trial in 2022?

After a rollercoaster year, the U.S. swimming team is glad to have their top performer back, tweeting about her latest record, “We’ve got new personal bests going down in Indy 👀” Many experts had derided the talented swimmer after her performance last year.

For the majority of her swimming career, Weitzeil has defended a top spot on the list of U.S. women swimmers. Even at the 2016 Olympics, she was placed in the seventh rank in the 100 m freestyle category. In 2021, she qualified for the Finals at the Tokyo Games in both the 50 and 100 m freestyle races. However, Weitseil faced a massive block soon after.

The legendary swimmer finished sixth in the 50 m freestyle and seventh in the 100 m freestyle. The national team did not select her for the 2022 World Championships, and later, they fired her coach Teri McKeever. At this stage, Weitzeil decided to start from the bottom. Since the beginning of the 2023 season, Abbey Weitzeil seems to be out for vengeance. She has been toppling one record after another, and it seems she will not stop until she regains her honor.
