Qin Haiyang is a Chinese swimmer en route to becoming one of the greats in the swimming world. While Haiyang is the triple World breaststroke champion, Great Britain’s Adam Peaty needs no introduction. He is a double Olympic Gold Medalist, an 8-time world champion, and the 50-100m world record holder. Although the 24-year-old Chinese swimmer is less experienced than Peaty, he is the only swimmer to beat Peaty’s timings.

Both the swimmers are arguably the best in present times. Haiyang recently won triple gold at the Asian Games. The Chinese star-swimmer is expected to compete in the World Cup tour in October, and potentially face Adam Peaty. Although Peaty is coming off from a mental health break, will Haiyang be able to continue his red-hot form as he eyes the defending Olympic Gold medalist’s world record?

Qin Haiyang rose to fame after breaking 2 world junior records at the 2017 Chinese Nationals. He hasn’t looked back since then, winning medals on the trot. In the 2023 Chinese Nationals, Haiyang ripped a 57.93 swim to clinch gold, setting his new personal best. With this monster of a record, the Chinese became only third after Adam Peaty and Arno Kamminga to finish the 100m breast event in under 58 seconds. The World Aquatics recently posted a post on X and captioned it “This is Qin Haiyang. Let?s get to know some of the stars who will join us in for the Swimming World Cup 2023.”

Haiyang went further to become the first swimmer to clinch the 50,100 and 200 stroke at Worlds. He posted a 26.20 in the 50 breast at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan becoming the #2 performers behind Great Britain’s Peaty. This is arguably his best summer, with another triple gold coming at the Asian games in China.

Adam Peaty has been on a mental health break and didn’t take part in the 2023 World Championships. However, he is one of the best swimmers in the world. Having won two back-to-back Olympic Gold medals, he is the current world record holder in the 100-metre breaststroke.

Breaking his own records, Peaty went on to win his first Gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in 57.13 seconds setting a new world record. He later defended his medal in the 2020 Olympic Games. However, the 28-year-old hasn’t been able to taste much success after the Tokyo Olympics with only a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke at the Short Course Championships last year. With these two great contemporary swimmers set to clash during the World Cup tour next month, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Clash of Titans: The Winner

Looking at their current form, it’s clear Haiyang is way ahead. The 24-year-old recently shattered the 200m breast world record at the Fukuoka Worlds in July. High on confidence, the Chinese star won a hat-trick of gold at the Asian games, both in breaststroke and backstroke events respectively.

However, one can never write off a champion like Adam Peaty. He defeated Qin last year while competing for bronze at the Short Course Championships, and will look to repeat the same to gain some confidence.

Qin has his eyes set on the World record and would look to achieve the same in Berlin at the World Cup tour on October 6-8. The 24-year-old will also have last year’s defeat in the back of his mind and would look to avenge the same. If these Titans clash, it should definitely be a thrilling contest. Who do you think will come out on top?
