Michael Phelps is a legendary swimmer with the highest number of Olympic medals. Phelps had an extraordinary teenage. In the age of partying and playing around, he was focused on becoming an Olympian. He or anyone else didn’t know he will be a legend one day. However, at the mere age of 15, he made his Olympics debut in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Despite his busy schedule of practicing, he had some best friends in junior high. But the difference remained, as they both were football players and Phelps was a swimmer. In his autobiography, “Beneath The Surface- My Story, he mentioned an incident that reflects their bond with each other.

Michael Phelps recalled an incident with his friends

Having an amazing couple of friends is a treasure. Michael Phelps had the treasure as Matt and Ayo in his junior high days. Matt and Ayo were two football enthusiasts and players who used to kid Phelps about swimming being a contactless sport. On the other hand, Phelps used to offer them the trade and swap their respective games.

Phelps describes their bond as very strong. He wrote“We could rip one another at will and nobody would get mad… usually.” One day Phelps and Matt were kidding around with Ayo, and it got him more than they assumed. Moreover, while walking back home, Phelps threw a stick and, because of his poor aim, it struck Ayo’s head.

That was the time Ayo lost his temper and things went ahead. Phelps wrote, “He rushed at me and body-slammed me against the concrete. Five minutes later, we were all laughing again. It’s a guy thing.”

The three best friends had a great time in junior high together. They shared incredible fun and notorious moments in their school life. Amongst all the ADHD issues in childhood, Phelps used to have a great time when he was with these two.

Phelps even shared an incident where he and Matt made a fool out of them in front of everybody. He recalled, “Whenever he was juggling okay, I was dropping balls on the stage. When I had them in the air, his collided and bounced away. The kids and teachers in the audience weren’t cheering or booing; instead they were just hoping we’d get off the stage.”
