Indianapolis is all set to stage one of the biggest national events in the US from June 27 – July 1. Talented swimmers with international repute are all set to congregate at the said venue for the contest. US Olympic legend Caeleb Dressel will also grace the pool. One swimmer, an age group record holder who broke both the 49-second and 42-second barriers as the youngest American swimmer to do so, is likely missing the competitions.

Kaii Winkler, a 17-year-old swimming prodigy, has broken several records in recent times and looked to be a potential threat to Dressel in the future. However, an unfortunate injury has forced him to sit out of the championships.

The 2023 Phillips 66 National Championships will take place at the University Natatorium in Indianapolis. Caeleb Dressel, who is marking his return to swimming after a year, is taking position tonight at Indianapolis. Kaii Winkler, an up-and-coming US swimmer, however, has suffered an injury of unknown nature. As per the updated psych sheets by USA Swimming, Winkler will now sit out of the championships. This unfortunate update has now prevented swimming fans from witnessing what could’ve been a thrilling contest between him and Dressel.

A potential rivalry could be brewing in the future

Winkler was seeded 12th and 23rd in 100m and 200m freestyle respectively before the championships. He broke the 49-second barrier in Fort Lauderdale in March and the 42-second barrier the same month. On the other hand, Dressel, who has 7 Olympic gold medals with an Olympic record in the 100m butterfly, will look to make a strong mark in his comeback.

Dressel is a nationally beloved swimming champion and will have the fans by his side wherever he competes. Just a year ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024, this championship could be effective for him to get back in the groove. Whereas, things look cloudy for Kaii Winkler for now. Given that he has missed the US National Championships, it is too early to talk about his Olympic participation as of now. However, it would mark a great contest in the future if that does happen.
