Michael Phelps is a known name in the media. The Baltimore resident is often seen making the headlines, but this time he is in the news, not for something he has done. A 17 years young swimmer from Canada created headlines as he broke the Phelps 50-meter butterfly race record.

With this new development, the record of the swimming GOAT now stands broken. The young boy swam the 50-meter race faster than any Canadian in his age group.

Michael Phelps’ record now stands broken

For the unversed, the Mount Pearl Marlins swimmer Chris Weeks, 17, competed in the FINA World Cup last weekend in Toronto and finished with a time of 23.91 seconds. With this, the young swimmer broke past Phelps’s earlier record of ‘24.1 seconds in the 15-17 age category. The news details were also shared officially on Twitter by the CBC Olympics.

The record is also said to be an ‘unofficial Canadian record.’ The race was not officially tracked since the 50-meter butterfly race is not included in the Olympic discipline. Nonetheless, with his prolific performance, the Kilbride teenager outperformed the Olympic veteran Michael Phelps.

Earlier, he?quoted, “Michael Phelps is definitely an inspiration to a lot of swimmers, including?myself.” Thus, when he broke the record of his inspiration, he could not help but express his gratitude. Talking about the same, Chris said,?“I think that it’s amazing to be able to get on to that level, and I’m just happy that I’m headed in the right direction.”?However, this is not the first time Chris has stolen the limelight. He also secured Newfoundland and Labrador’s first gold medal in the pool since 1993. Undeniably he is a champion in the making.

Phelps and his streak of records?

With 28 Olympic wins, there is hardly any doubt that Michael?Phelps?is the swimming GOAT. With years of professional excellence, Phelps’ achievements at the pool started at a young age. The young boy was just 15 years old when he?broke the 400m free world record. Since then, there has been no looking back for him.

What followed next was an avalanche of records. In 2003, Phelps won the 200 free, 200 back, and 100 fly at Nationals, becoming the first swimmer in US history to win three events in three separate strokes at a single National competition. He eventually registered himself as the “Greatest of All Time” by winning the maximum number of Olympic medals.
