In 2019, Laird Hamilton appeared on a podcast with Joe Rogan and opened up about his perception of overdoing work and his encounter with Elon Musk.

Hamilton said that people have started romanticizing the culture of overbooking. People feel great honor and pride in missing out on important things, because of unnecessary obsession with exertion. He said, “They think it’s a badge of honour.

He further added that once she advised Elon Musk regarding the same context. Hamilton recalled having a word with Elon Musk about his lifestyle during his visit to SpaceX. “I put my hand on his chest and I said you got to take care of this, you got to take care of you,” he recounted.

Joe Rogan further asked Hamilton about Elon Musk’s reaction. Hamilton replied that Elon didn’t react much. That he was genuinely worried about Elon Musk’s health and diet. Hamilton felt that people like him can do wonders if they take good care of themselves. “Imagine what they could do fully balanced”, he added.

Hamilton believes that an overall healthy lifestyle is a key to optimum performance in any field. A person should be satisfied in all aspects of his life to achieve his goals and keep excelling at the same time. He also added that if even one of these aspects is missing, then it would have a direct impact on the performance of an individual. He said, “Your head needs to be clear when you go into your performance whatever that looks like.”

Laird Hamilton has always emphasized the fact that he didn’t understand people’s obsession with excessive hard work. Hamilton feels that people miss out on many important things just because they want recognition for their sacrifices. “You are compromising”, he added.
