The 11-time ASP World Tour Champion is the first of his kind to qualify for the WSL championship tour. Recently, WSL posted an interview with Moroccan surfer Ramzi Boukhiam on their Instagram story where he discussed the potential rematch of the Tahiti Pros. Boukhiam expressed his desire for a rematch saying, “I was asking for one more chance during the last ten minutes. However, Slater – who had the upper hand – did not seem keen. The rivalry between Kelly Slater and Ramzi Boukhiam, though relatively new, has quickly become a focal point in the surfing world. Their initial clash at a previous World Surf League event saw the seasoned Slater narrowly defeat the young Moroccan star. Boukhiam’s fierce competitiveness and Slater’s strategic mastery marked that encounter, leaving fans eagerly awaiting their rematch.

In the lead-up to their much-anticipated rematch, Slater’s nonchalant response added fuel to the fire. Boukhiam added, “He [Slater] said hmm I don’t know.” Later when it didn’t work out, Slater said, “I guess not today, but like joking you know.” Boukhiam further stated that it’s all good between them, saying, “I got him once, he got me this once. So let’s hope for some more.” Kelly Slater, even at the age of 52, dominated the 2024 Tahiti Pros, winning over defending Tahiti Pro champion Jack Robinson and Ramzi Boukhiam who is making a name for himself on the World Surf League Champion Tour.

Slater’s fluid and technical surfing method was in contrast to the Moroccan surfer Boukhiam’s aggressive style. Boukhiam is on a redemption arc seeking to prove his worth against Slater. Additionally, the waves at Teahupo’o are better suited for Boukhiam’s style. This is because Slater struggled to maintain precise footwork and stability against those aggressive waves. The predicted swell and wave quality both affected the individual swimmers differently. The Pros were an exciting game to witness.

Despite being a wild card entry, Kelly Slater sent Ramzi Biukhiam into elimination with the men’s second-highest heat score of the day at Teahupo’o with 14.50. Reportedly, he “alpha-maled” Jack. But, Boukhiam did well before his disqualification. His backhand surfing on the right-handers of Supertubos was “incisive and powerful,” as he beat Connor O’Leary and Yaga Dora. In his heat with Dira, he “struck early, sending spray arching towards the horizon” and scored an 8.50 for his mastery.

A re-match has not been confirmed or scheduled yet. But, it could have a significant impact on the surfing world. Slater’s performance was outstanding for his age. He has the skills and experience to compete at the highest level. His victory in the rematch could signal his stronghold over the sport which would inspire a whole new generation of surfers. But Boukhiam’s victory could signal a changing of the guards which will be equally important. Regardless of the outcome, the rematch will undoubtedly influence future competitions, setting a high standard for athleticism, strategy, and the ever-evolving dynamics of professional surfing.
