The devastating wildfire in Hawaii forced locals to take charge of the situation due to the lack of government involvement. What frustrated the people of Maui was the government’s alleged negligence towards its citizens. The poor reaction of the government not only shook the local population but also drew criticism from professional surfer Kai Lenny, who is also from Hawaii. Lenny took swift action to help the people instead of waiting for federal assistance.

The residents of Hawaii also criticized the ungrateful response of the local authorities. Some even suggested that the incident was not just a natural disaster but also a man-made calamity. The 30-year-old Kai Lenny expressed shock at how the people of Maui did not receive adequate assistance from the government.

The death number in Maui due to the devastating wildfire rose to 106 and swept through Hawaii Island. The fire broke out on the 8th of August and burned beyond 2170 acres of land, including 2200 structures. While the residents started to pick up the devastated pieces, they were completely unhappy with the government’s take on this matter. It saddened the surfing professional Kai Lenny. Also, it made him comment, “I haven’t seen one state, one country, one federal official at any one of the donation hubs where people are mostly suffering.” He added that the government is still not showing enough humanity to the suffering people crying for help.

Lenny also highlighted how Hawaiian people now feel like they are the last to be considered. Born in Hawaii, the surfer Kai started receiving requests for assistance, prompting him to rush to Hawaii because he knew he had to help the underprivileged. Upon reaching the location, he and his team began gathering resources, including charter planes and jet skis, for transporting supplies such as medicine, food, and clothing. Lenny reported that initially, the government intervened and prevented the airplanes from delivering these items. The FEMA reported that 300 workers were doing jobs on Maui Ground. But, Lenny said on CBC News, “It was just like, day after day, where are they?”. He further pointed out that he had not seen any workers, and no one came to help them, which is quite disappointing.
