Sophia Culhane, a young surfer hailing from the shores of Hawaii, is making waves in the surfing world. At the age of just eight, Culhane began her competitive journey, dabbling in both short-boarding and longboarding. She officially entered the WSL Longboarding Tour in 2020, and at the age of 16, she had her breakthrough year. Her goal is to break the record held by Rachael Tilly, who became the youngest world champion at the age of 17 in 2015. Now in 2023, The World Surf League (WSL) Longboard Tour is unfolding in an epic showdown.

On the third stop of the tour, the surfing community gathered for the Surf City El Salvador Longboard Classic, presented by Corona. Hawaii’s Culhane, the youngest competitor on the Longboard Tour, showcased her impeccable skills. She faced her formidable competitor, Kelis Kaleopa’a, who was a fellow Waikiki standout, in an exciting battle at El Sunzal for the finals and claimed victory. The win for Culhane stood out amongst enthusiasts, and soon it ignited a frenzy of admiration and awe for her in the wave-riding community.

Sophia Culhane continues her ‘World Champion’ promise

In the women’s final, Kelis Kaleopa’a and Culhane, two rising stars from Waikiki, were up against each other. Culhane picked up points quickly with a 6.00, compared to Kelis who secured a 5.83 and 2.50 in the initial openers. Culhane then received a 5.63 to win the heat as she continued with chic forehand surfing. With an important exchange later, she picked up a score of an excellent 7.50, solidifying her lead over Kaleopa’a. Culhane then maintained this upper hand, as she clinched her first event win against the top surfers.

Culhane’s journey to victory has included a significant win over multiple World Title runner-up Chloe Calmon in the quarterfinals and 2015 WSL Longboard Champion Rachael Tilly in the semi-finals. With this impressive performance, she now sets her sights on her first World Title run at the Original Sprout Malibu Longboard Classic, scheduled from October 3rd to October 13th. Taking to Instagram, WSL congratulated the young talent in a post that showed Culhane perched atop the shoulders of John Michael Van Hohenstein and Kaniela Stewart as they carried her after her big win. The surfing community went into a frenzy over Culhane’s exceptional win, as thousands of likes and comments poured in.
