Legendary surfer Kelly Slater is doing great in his career even in his 50s. This indicates that the surfer consciously takes care of his health which enables him to perform effortlessly in competitions. Recently, Slater opened up on the battle that his girlfriend Kalani Miller fought with a deadly disease denoting the importance of knowing what works best for someone. 

A week ago, Slater appeared in a casual interview with record producer Jason Gilbert on his YouTube channel. He shared his tips for surfing longevity, talking about how he and his girlfriend take care of their health.

Kelly Slater’s girlfriend fought a disease for 20 years

During his interview, Kelly Slater revealed that his long-time girlfriend Kalani Miller experienced an autoimmune disease for 20 years. Autoimmune diseases prevent the body from fighting back diseases and infections. In fact, it wrongfully attacks the healthy cells, tissues, and organs in the body. Suffering from the disease for nearly 20 years, Kalani consumed methotrexates and many other gnarly steroids. Slater revealed in the interview that throughout her experience, “She had been to tons and tons of doctors for 20 years” 

After experiencing these hardships, Kalani comprehended the things that best worked out for her. Most importantly, she adapted to a healthier lifestyle to look after herself. Kalani resorted to healthier food options and routines that suited her body the best. In fact, not just herself, Kalani also takes care of Kelly’s lifestyle. She insists on him taking his vitamin pills on time and consuming the right meals for himself. 

 

Slater further summarized Kalani’s healing process, saying, “She has learned enough to basically heal herself through the people we’ve met around the world, geneticists we’ve seen naturopaths, we’ve seen all different modalities of doctors and trying to put it all together.”

All these efforts have helped Kalani know her body better. Moreover, she also takes notice of the nutrients that work best for her body and her food allergies too. Sharing her story, Slater stressed the idea of investing in our bodies.

During the same interview, Slater cited a study performed by Harvard University. The study indicates that investing in health provides 2000% returns. He emphasized that it is useful to know what is happening inside the body so that one can take necessary precautions to avoid any health risks.

He stated in the interview, “Food allergy tests, different blood tests, inflammation. I mean, why else you have money? You know, you should spend money on yourself for your health.” Slater expressed that when we have the power to invest in our health then – why not? After all, it is we who will enjoy the long-term benefits.
