As reported by 3 News, the Texas Coastal Bend Surfrider Foundation played a pivotal role in organizing the event and even donated $1,000 to bring 30 participants all the way from Oklahoma. The remaining 15 participants were local enthusiasts eager to seize the opportunity to ride the waves.
The camp commenced on a sunny Saturday afternoon, with the surf sessions running from 3 PM to 5 PM, and it was scheduled for two days. The enthusiasm among the participants was palpable, as they eagerly donned their life jackets and got ready to experience the thrill of surfing. A team of over 50 dedicated volunteers was present to guide and assist the participants throughout the camp, ensuring their safety and support in the water. For the protection of differently-abled individuals, a thoughtful measure was taken by not allowing them to venture into the water deeper than waist height.

Cliff Schlabach, co-chairperson of the Texas Coastal Bend Surfrider Foundation, remarked, “The participants here, they love it. They will do it until you will fall over, you’re so tired, and they still want to do it some more. So, yeah, they’re all surfers.” The Make Promises Happen Surf Camp holds a deeply meaningful history, as it was initiated by Cliff Schlabach and his wife in 1998. Their vision was to create a platform where differently-abled individuals could experience the profound joy and healing power of surfing.
As the 24th event concluded with resounding success, Cliff Schlabach expressed his vision for the future. He envisions expanding the camp, incorporating a surfing competition, trophies, and even a beachside barbecue and party to celebrate the participants’ achievements. The camp has become a symbol of inclusivity, bridging gaps and creating a sense of belonging for everyone involved.
