“I want people to experience something mind-blowing in nature” – Hawaiian surfing photographer, Clark Little lives by his philosophies. Born and brought up on Oahu’s North Shore, Little has always been fascinated by big barrels. Hence, his curiosity to dive deep into the wave spectacles got the best of him and he started capturing the ocean at its most powerful.

Growing up in the vicinity of wave pinnacle piqued Little’s interest in surfing at a very young age. Thus, he started paddling big waves and trounce giant barrels. However, it wasn’t until his 30s, that he made an impromptu decision of picking up a waterproof camera to click his wife’s pictures while she was surfing. Since then, his career in surf photography has catapulted, and he became a professional photographer. Now, the surfer shares some pensive tips for beginners on how to capture some beautiful pictures.

Pointers to click a good wave picture

In February 2023, Little appeared in an interview with USA Today, where he shared various tidbits about capturing a staunch still of a wave. As per the surfer, “The beach and ocean have so many moods”. Therefore, it is prominent to “get in touch with the mood of the day” and work with the conditions that nature gives. 

Nevertheless, for a photographer, it is important to make sure that the lens is clear, otherwise, an excellent shot can slip away. Knowing the limits when it comes to the ocean is another important crux that one needs to remember, according to Little. “I’ve seen too many people get into bad situations without expecting it or knowing it”, asserted the surfer.

Little believes that it is salient to enjoy the process. “The key is to have fun”, said Little. Interestingly, his works are featured in some of the most elite art galleries around the world and he is considered one of the most renowned surf photographers across the continents.

Little’s art took him to some beautiful surfing destinations

Paddling on Banzai Pipeline and capturing snaps of the wave while surfing on it are two different things. The latter is indeed one difficult task. But not for Little, as he clicked some breathtaking images by barreling in the pipeline wave. Nonetheless, his passion for capturing the merciless wave pinnacles into the camera took him to Japan, Brazil, Tonga, and many other destinations.

His artwork has been displayed in renowned galleries and museums. More so, his work got featured in the New York Times, The Surfer’s Journal, and National Geographic. Clearly, the surfer garnered global recognition through his incredible talent. Clark Little concedes, “I want to take them to a dangerous and beautiful place up close. Most people can’t be where I am. It’s my way of taking people along”.
