Recently, South Africa witnessed a surfing spectacle like no other. The Corona Open J-Bay is Stop No. 9 in the World Surf League and home to some of the best Supertubes in Africa. Rising to the occasion, the men’s final was dominated by pro surfer Filipe Toledo as he carved his way to victory. After winning the Surf City El Salvador Pro last month, the Brazilian had his sight set on J-Bay.
Toledo’s triumph proved why he is one of the best surfers in the world, winning the Corona Open J-Bay for the third time. The number one surfer in the world recently took to his social media to share his winning moments from the tournament.
Filipe Toledo dominates Corona Open J-Bay

After a stunning surfing display, the Brazilian posted some pictures on his Instagram for his fans. Toledo demonstrated his sheer mastery of the waves, earning his 15th Championship Tour win with near-perfect rides. His recent performances have surged him to the number-one spot on the WSL’s 2023 ranking. Toledo’s dominance was on full display during the Final against defending event winner, Ethan Ewing of Australia. With a near-perfect heat total of 18.76 out of 20, Toledo left no doubt about his superiority in the water. He also expressed his gratitude towards everybody who supported him by captioning his post, “Thank you all for the support!”

This was the Brazilian’s 15th CT win, and his third at J-Bay. His other two wins at J-Bay came back to back in 2017 and 2018. Toledo’s unparalleled performance further solidified his standing atop the rankings as the tour heads towards the thrilling climax of the season at the Rip Curl WSL Finals. Ethan Ewing, the defending event winner, fought valiantly to reach the Final again, but he found himself facing an unstoppable force in Toledo. On his road to the final, the Australian defeated Jordy Smith, Connor O’Leary, and Gabriel Medina.
According to a Freesurf report, Toledo claimed, “J-Bay sure has a big place in my heart, I love the vibes here and love the people.” Toledo’s impeccable performance not only added another trophy to his already illustrious career but also secured a provisional spot at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The world number 1 will proudly represent Brazil at the iconic Teahupo’o in Tahiti next year. Joining him at the Olympics is also a star-studded cast that needs no introduction.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are just a year away and three talented surfers have provisionally qualified to represent their countries on the world’s grandest stage.
