A family of two teenage girls, and a mother and her three children got in distress at Kiama Beach. To this, six friends, aged between 12 and 15, found themselves thrust into a life-or-death situation while enjoying their boogie-boarding session post-life-saving patrol hours. They are Alex Norris, Max Laird, Zach Marsden, Braith Davidson, Harrison Smee, & George Griffin. These surf stars are from the Kiama Surf Life Saving Club equipped with the skills honed through rigorous training sessions.
According to ABC News, the group sprang into action when they caught cries for help. The elder Smee, from the group, mentioned, ?They were having fun near the shore one minute, and next minute you hear them screaming, taken out by the rip. It was instant?.
George said the family was in real danger by the time they arrived. “I got to an 8, 9-year-old kid called Matt, and by the time I got to him he was completely under water, just his hand above the surface of the water, so I was pretty worried,” he said.
The group has been a part of the Bronze Medallion Course and Life Saving Certificate. The President of the Kiama SLSC, Phil Perry, commended their remarkable response in the face of unpredictable conditions. After Saturday, a separate yet equally heroic incident took place on another evening and took the internet by storm.
