The tremors have finally set in the American surfing scene. The surfing prodigies bearing the Star-spangled banner were forced to exit the 2023 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship with a clean slate except for the team silver. While the American surfers wallowed in self-pity, one 15-year-old rising talent from Spain accrued unprecedented plaudits from the fans.

Hans Odriozola went head-to-head against the Brazilian, Australian, and American contenders for the battle to the Boys Under 16 title. The Spaniards have never had a surfer topple the heavyweight contenders in the category. Hans Odriozola was among the smorgasbord of young surfers in attendance at Rio de Janeiro for the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship. Between 24 November and 1 December, the young Spanish legend showcased his surfing skills on the waves with a streak of podium finishes. All the wins led him to the final stage, where the youngster collected accolades with his last-minute victory. ISA Surfing sent cheers all over the internet by sharing a video of Odriozola on their Instagram story. The surfing federation captioned the video, Hans Odriozola with 15 seconds left on his heat needed an 8.05 to become the Under 16 2023 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship”.

 

The video showed Hans Odriozola looking calm as the clock ticked close to the last bell. Surprisingly, he caught sight of a wave and took a position for the game-changing ride. With a big flip and arms drawn to welcome the praises from the roaring spectators, Hans Odriozola became Spain’s first-ever world junior champion. In his pursuit of glory, the Spanish prodigy squashed the dreams of a surfing legend’s son.

Lukas Skinner’s disappointment at ISA World Junior Surfing Championship

Lukas Skinner hails from a lineage that is resplendent with surfing glories at the Olympics. A scion of the legendary long boarding champion Ben Skinner, he hopes to compete at the 2028 Olympics. He believes with four more years of training, he will surpass his dad. He believed the world junior champion title would be a wonderful precursor for his 2028 campaign. However, fates had other designs in store for him.

Skinner was leading until the last fifteen seconds when Hans Odriozola overtook the Brit with a forehand air reverse. The Spaniard won the bout with a small lead of 0.05 points. Now, this setback has incited a new fire within Lukas Skinner, which will drive him to new heights in the surfing world.
