Surfing, with its adrenaline rush and fun quotient, also brings a high amount of risk with it. The arbitrary nature of waves turns them from friendly waters to unforgiving tides in a matter of seconds, which often becomes the stuff of nightmares for surfers everywhere. One such instance happened recently in a French Overseas Territory, where the surfers went completely under a massive wave. Here’s more about that horrific instance.
A TikTok video that went viral recently shows a mammoth wave that came out of nowhere. While surfers were enjoying a perfect day out in the ocean, things suddenly went dark for them. Shocked fans have now shared their terrifying reactions online.
The wave charged like a monster from the sea

Tiktoker Jonbakio wrote on the platform, “Mounster wave at Teahupoo” while sharing the 9-second clip on the platform. The video shows several surfers on their surfboards, lined up next to each other and enjoying what seems like a pretty normal wave. However, it suddenly grew in size. Like a monster in disguise taking its natural form and swallowing them whole. A few surfers that stayed behind could only watch the shocking incident unfold in front of them.
The incident happened at Teahupo’o beach in Tahiti. The tiny oceanic island, part of French Polynesia, is renowned for its large waves. These huge waves, not unlike Nazare in Portugal, often attract surfers. Teahupo’o in particular is a dream location for surfers, with ideal waves all year round.
This very reason is also why the Surfing contest at the Paris Olympics next year will be held here. This is the farthest an Olympic contest will be held outside the host city. As of now, fans still can’t keep calm about the sheer size of the waves there.
These comments will definitely give goosebumps to the surfing community
While the fan comments are equally hair-raising, one can’t help but wonder, what must it be like to be present in that situation, looking at a towering wave coming to get you. Here are some of their reactions:
For the first time since 2006, the women will be surfing a CT event at Teahupo'o. As one of 3 goofy foots in the draw, what are the chances @caroline_marks3 will be standing atop the podium?
