Surfing is one of the toughest water sports to do. It needs a high fitness level and also some extensive training before getting into the sea. Kale Brock is a film director and a surfer who travels the world and surfs at different destinations. In 2022, when he visited Sydney for a coaching trip, he united with his friend Nic Laidlaw, who is a movement and surf extraordinaire. In the YouTube video uploaded in 2022, they talk about the five important positions which are essential to master before you try surfing.
As a surfing coach, Kale has been surfing in different countries and spreading knowledge. However, this time around Kale and Nic came up with the Surf Movement Flow series, which will help to reduce injuries during surfing. One can certainly do surfing without being able to attain these poses. However, if one can successfully attain this position, their risk of injury minimizes by several times.

Even more than flexibility, having access to the range of motion improves the quality of experience. So, which are these positions? The first position is a full squat (plus extension with ease). One must be able to get as low as possible while doing the squat and easily get up as well. The second thing is a fluid spinal wave test. To test this, one must be able to comfortably roll down and touch the floor.

Whereas, the third position is shoulder raise, but whilst maintaining pelvic integrity. Furthermore, the fourth position is the sitting rotation test. In this, one has to stretch and rotate the body to the back without feeling any restriction in the lower back. And the last position is the slide-up test. In this test, one has to transform from a prone position to a standing position.
And if you can strike all these boxes, you are ready to go into the sea and surf.
Surfing is thrilling yet brutal at times
At the beginning of 2023, on 18th January, a young bodyboarding surfer, Evan McMillen lost his life in the sea. As thrilling as surfing is, it comes with uncounted dangers with it. The 21-year-old surfer was surfing at Dana Point, California when this misfortune happened.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t make it back alive. The surfer fell from his board and was later discovered in the seas and pulled back to the shore. All the emergency protocols were followed, but nothing could revive him back and the accident resulted in the untimely demise of a young surfer.
