While the rest of America celebrated the 4th of July with fireworks and barbecues, Lyudmila Emag had to rush to the ER after a vicious attack. Emag is a trained nurse practicing in Brooklyn. She wanted to spend the day on Fire Island relaxing and enjoying the cool ocean, but her plans took a terrifying turn when a shark attacked her. This incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of beachgoers and the need for increased shark awareness. Sharks are increasingly coming closer to the shorelines leading to such attacks.

This is exactly what happened with Lyudmila Emag, who had just stepped into the ocean after a beach walk. She was still in narrow waters when she felt the shark chomping on her thigh. She relived the moment in a recent interview and spoke in detail about the attack.

Emag spoke to NewsNation on July 23 in an exclusive interview, recounting the harrowing details of her shark attack. When the shark grabbed hold of her thigh, Emag thought it was just some regular fish. She tried to push it off of her when the shark sank its teeth into her. The daredevil nurse used her bare hands to force open the shark’s jaws and free herself. She rushed back to the shore and inspected the wounds.

In the interview, she said, “I saw the blood trickling and I was actually happy”. This was an unusual statement from Emag, but she quickly explained that she felt glad that her leg was intact although heavily injured. Always an optimist, she was happy to be standing on her two feet after the attack. Her friends rushed by her side and took her to the hospital. They reported about Emag’s emotional state after the attack.

In the moment of panic during the attack, Emag felt unnerved and cried out for help. However, when she arrived at the South Shore University Hospital, Emag was back to her usual cheery disposition. Dr. Nadia Baranchuk, the emergency doctor on call that day, reported to CBS News, saying, “She was super calm. Like, this is not what you expect from shark bites”.

Emag did not request any pain medications, and the doctor supposed she didn’t feel any pain due to the adrenaline. Emag is still determined to return to the beach one day, but she will give Fire Island a wide berth. It was the second shark attack of the day on Fire Island. The doctors hadn’t received any shark bite cases in over five years. The authorities are now warning beachgoers about the close proximity of sharks on several beaches.
