The Tahitian island of Teahupo’o holds a special place in Slater’s career. After making his debut in the surfing arena in the 1990s, the surfer started garnering attention with his exceptional wins. Tahiti Pro, one of the most reputed surfing championships, saw Slater win five times in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2011, and 2016. However, in 2019, the world was shocked when the champion surfer broke his winning streak against opponent Jack Freestone.

Not just Kelly Slater, but two-time world champion, John John Florence also brought the attention of his followers to the situation in Teahupo’o.
