It’s often said that the greatest achievements come from the biggest motivations and Blake Johnston is a living example of it. Australian surfer Blake Johnston has made headlines by setting a new world record for surfing continuously for 40 hours. But his iconic feat was not just about breaking a record. It had a greater goal of catering to youth all across the globe. 

Johnston started his attempt on Friday morning and continued surfing through the night. But for Johnston, his record-breaking attempt was more than just a personal challenge. He has been vocal about his struggles with mental health and used his feat to raise awareness about the importance of mental health in the youth.

The champion surfers talked with 7News Australia and revealed his aim behind the goal. “Wanted to make a little bit of difference”, he told the reporter. “Thanks to you guys coming together, that’s how it all works. It’s really powerful”, he added. The 31-year-old surfer wanted to set a new record to inspire others to pursue their passions and push their limits.

Johnston further gave credit for his victory to the entire community and especially his better half. “That’s not just about me but the entire community, and especially her”, he said while pointing at his wife who was standing with him. The historic achievement has drawn global attention to him.

Johnston surfed over more than 700 waves during his attempt. The man raised more than $300,000 through his campaign and promised that the entire amount will go to the Chumpy Pullin Foundation. The kind gesture has been praised by the surfing community.

Johnston hopes that his record-breaking attempt will inspire young people to take care of their mental health and seek help when needed. Johnston’s feat is a powerful reminder that sports and physical activity can be a great way to manage mental health.
